How much does a website cost? It's the question we hear most often, and it's also the one the internet answers worst: search online and you'll find €99 offers next to quotes worth tens of thousands, almost never with an explanation of what they actually include. The truth is that the right price depends on what you need. In this guide we bring some order: the factors that determine the cost, realistic ranges in 2026 for an Italian small or medium business, and the warning signs of offers hiding nasty surprises.

What pushes the price up (or down)

A website isn't an off-the-shelf product with a single price list: it's tailored work, and the price reflects the amount of work behind it. The factors that really matter are few:

  • Number of pages: every page has to be designed, written and optimized. A five-page site and a twenty-page site don't take the same effort.

  • Custom design or template: a well-adapted template costs less and is a legitimate choice; a design created from scratch around your identity costs more, but sets you apart from competitors using the same graphics.

  • E-commerce: selling online means catalog, payments, shipping, invoicing. It's a different project from a brochure site, with different costs.

  • Languages: a site in Italian and English doesn't cost double, but translating and adapting the content takes time that must be budgeted for.

  • Content: if texts and photos already exist, the work flows; if they need to be created from scratch, that line belongs in the quote.

  • Maintenance: updates, backups and security are a small recurring cost that prevents big ones. An abandoned website ages fast.

How much does a website cost in 2026: realistic ranges

Every project is its own story, but some honest reference points can be given. A professional brochure site — presenting your business, services and contacts: what most small businesses need — runs from a few hundred to a few thousand euros, depending on the factors above. To give a concrete reference: our packages start from €1,500 for a professional five-page site, fully owned by you and with basic SEO included.

An e-commerce site starts higher, because catalog, payments and order management require far more design and testing work. And custom projects — portals, booking systems, integrations with management software — are assessed case by case. If an offer sits far below these ranges, the question to ask isn't "what a deal", but "what's missing".

Too-cheap offers: the warning signs

The €99 website exists, but it's rarely a bargain. The savings are usually paid for elsewhere, and the signs are always the same:

  • The site isn't yours: the domain, hosting or even the content stays registered to the provider. If you ever want to switch, you start over from zero.

  • Hosting lock-in: mandatory monthly fees to keep the site online, with no way to move it anywhere else.

  • No basic SEO: the site is online but Google can't find it, because titles, texts and technical structure were never taken care of.

  • "All inclusive" with no details: if the quote doesn't list what it includes, it usually includes little.

The simplest test: before signing, ask in writing who will own the domain and the site, and what happens if you decide to change provider. Vague answers tell you everything.

Fixed quote or hourly rate?

Then there's the question of how the price is calculated. An hourly rate looks transparent, but it shifts all the risk onto you: if the work drags on, you pay more, without knowing in advance how much. A fixed, detailed quote works the other way around: what will be delivered — pages, features, revisions, timelines — is defined up front, and the figure doesn't change. If a provider can't give you a closed price, it often means they haven't really understood the project. And it's better to find that out before signing, not after.
